As is.I was intrigued and surprised by the notion of terra cotta wine cooler when I got one. After running cold water and cleaning the container, I placed it where I was going to store it but then decide to put it somewhere else.
I'm not a big wine drinker so don't know too much about the accessories for it. To my surprise, when I had to move the pot I felt the inside the pot was cooler than before I ran cold water, so I thought that was kind of cool.
We are blessed with refrigerators and ice nowadays but who needs to run back and forth and miss out on conversations when you got a bottle that can stay cool without diluting the wine to have it cold/cool?
History of Romertopf, tips and mechanics of what to do with a clay wine chiller if you don't already own one:
It is first soaked in water, then emptied and a bottle of wine is placed inside.
The water evaporating from the clay lowers the temperature of the air surrounding the bottle and helps keep the contents cool.
This is not a device for giving room temperature white wine a crisp chill. How do you use a wine brick?
It can also be used in Winter to keep your red wine at the correct room temperature. There are two ways to use it: For chilling white wine and rosé: Soak the wine cooler in cold water for about 7 minutes.
The clay will darken as it absorbs the moisture, empty the water and place your favourite bottle of chilled…
To keep your wine chilled for even longer, fill the bottom of your terra cotta wine cooler with ice. Replace the ice as it melts.
Add already-chilled bottles of wine once you’ve gone through the first bottle.

The Romertopf Company
The raw, porous pots are shaped for a variety of uses and sizes, and only the interior of the bottom piece is glazed with a layer of pure, non-porous glass.
The clay is very pure and has always been free of lead, cadmium, dyes, plasticizers or anything else that could leach into foods.
All Römertopf products are made from all natural clay which is farmed from a very famous region in Germany for its superior clay.
Ransbach-Baumbach, Germany has one of the best clay quarries in the world which can be found in the Westerwald.
