    Description

    Camp Fannin Historical Publications
Two different historical publications covering Camp Fannin, Texas, as follows:
[1] CAMP FANNIN, TEXAS, A 50 YEAR PERSPECTIVE by Gordon J. Neilson. Copyright 1993 by Tyler Press, Tyler, Texas under the auspices of the Camp Fannin Association. Soft cover, large format, 109 pages covering the history of the camp from its inception and opening in May 1943 until its closure in January 1946. Also covers the post-war acquisition of part of the camp which would become today's University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler. Numerous interviews with veterans who trained at the camp [including the author, who was originally from Wisconsin and decided to call Tyler home upon his discharge from the camp].
[2] CHRONICLES OF SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS, Vol. 22, No. 2, Winter 1983. Feature story THE FIRST TRAINEE AT CAMP FANNIN. Other Fannin-related stories are CAMP FANNIN: A 40-YEAR PERSPECTIVE by Gordon J. Neilson, CAMP FANNIN MISCELLANY, and POW KALEIDOSCOPE [the latter covering the experiences of several German POWs held at the camp]. One of the notable features is a fairly detailed map from March 1944 showing the various cantonment areas in relation to the regional highway system.
Light wear to edges of covers but no tears, missing pages or other damage. Located northeast of Tyler, the camp operated as an Infantry Replacement Training Center [IRTC] and as mentioned above, operated from 1943 to 1946. Following the end of the war in 1945, it also served as a demobilization camp for tens of thousands of East Texas GIs returning home from the war. Nice stuff for any Camp Fannin fan, in very good condition and one price gets both! Any questions please feel free to ask.
